American Gelbvieh Association to honor Hall of Fame, Member of the Year winnersThe American Gelbvieh Association will induct two men into the American Gelbvieh Association Hall of Fame. Bobby Myrick of Biscoe, N.C., will be inducted into the Hall of Fame and Tony Hayek of Iowa will be posthumously inducted into the Hall of Fame. Jerry Grund of Wallace, Kan., will be honored as the AGA Member of the Year. These men will be honored on Saturday evening, January 12, 2008. Myrick has been a major promoter and influencer for Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle in the southeastern United States. Myrick became an active Gelbvieh member in 1988 and built his cowherd on functional females that had milk and fertility. He later saw an opportunity to become a major marketer of homozygous black and homozygous polled cattle. He began working towards a herd of predominantly black and polled Gelbvieh. Myrick's true gift and strength came in developing long term relationships with his commercial bull customers and other Gelbvieh breeders. He truly believed the seedstock business was a people business and his customers respected Myrick's cattle and his integrity. Tony Hayek came to the Gelbvieh breed as a young man right out of high school in 1976. He took over his family's farm as a senior in high school due to the untimely death of his father. He soon purchased Gelbvieh bulls to use in the commercial herd and then moved to a seedstock operation. Tony and his wife, Barb, exhibited cattle all across the Midwest to promote the Gelbvieh breed. It became a family affair with the addition of their children: Tina, Stan, Shellina and Janelle. Tony built the foundation of his Gelbvieh herd with sires like Helau, Belgrad, Hemo, Heijak and Floto. That foundation shows through in the Hayek's cowherd today. Tony Hayek was killed in a tractor accident in 2002, but his love for Gelbvieh cattle carries through in his family's involvement today. Jerry Grund was nominated by the Kansas Gelbvieh Association and selected by the AGA Executive Committee for AGA Member of the Year. Grund has served as president of the Kansas Gelbvieh Association the past two years and has actively promoted Gelbvieh since he became a junior member back in the 1980s. He works with an area sale barn to host a special Gelbvieh-influenced feeder calf sale and other activities to promote Gelbvieh. 1/7/08 Date: 1/2/08
