Winning photos showcase spirit of Colorado agriculture

From cattle grazing in the early morning light to a team of horses plowing a field, the winning pictures from the tenth annual "Colorado...It's Agricultural" Photography Contest showcase the spirit of Colorado agriculture.

"These photographs help us educate the public as we promote the benefits of agriculture through our publications and website," said Wendy White, marketing specialist at the Colorado Department of Agriculture. "We received a record number of entries, and it is exciting to see how the diversity of Colorado agriculture is captured on film."

The winners were selected from more than 140 entries based on relation to Colorado agriculture, creativity and technical quality.

The grand-prize winner and recipient of a $100 gift card is Russ Shugart of Parker, Colo., with his entry entitled "While the Sun is Shining." The winning photo depicts a freshly cut hay field with Mt. Princeton in the background.

Other top finishers include Pat Martin, Grand Junction, Colo., first place in the historical Colorado agriculture category with "Gentle Giants;" Kelley Hewes, Sterling, Colo., first place livestock with "Dining at Dawn;" Joy Wooten, Kim, Colo., first place people with "Shut Down for Repairs;" and Ellen Moser, Greeley, Colo. first place in the yesterday and today category with "Irrigation-Then and Now."

Honorable mention recipients are Sue Hodgson, Brush, Colo.; Tracy Bye, Steamboat Springs, Colo.; Kelly Porter, Silt, Colo.; Holly Mitchek, Eads, Colo.; and Joy Wooten, Kim, Colo..

Winning photographs will be displayed in the Beede-Hamil Agriculture Building at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colo. They are also available online at www.coloradoagriculture.com.

The 2008 contest is now underway. Photographers can enter their pictures through Dec. 31, in four categories: crops, livestock, people and agritourism. Started in 1998, the "Colorado...It's Agricultural" Photography Contest is sponsored by the AgInsights Committee, Colorado Department of Agriculture and Northeastern Junior College.
