West Plains regional cattle salesThe West Plains Regional Stockyards, West Plains, Mo., reported receipts of 1,214 head Jan. 22, compared to 4,500 head last week and 1,650 head last year, according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News, Jefferson City, Mo. Compared to last week, feeders at 400 to 600 pounds were $4 to $6 higher, with some heifers trading $6 to $8 higher. The rest of the offerings generally were $1 to $3 higher. The supply was light as black ice covered roads making travel nearly impossible. Most of the offerings were overnight cattle that made it to the barn before weather arrived. The storm might have made getting to the auction difficult but nearly all the usual buyers were in attendance and the storm seemed to not only deliver ice but new buying orders also. Demand was good and this week's higher market was partly fueled by tumbling grain prices in the last week as investors have been selling off on fears of a recession. The feeder offering was made up of 56% steers, 41% heifers and 3% feeder bulls, with nearly 36% of the offerings weighted over 600 pounds.
