Springfield livestock salesThe Springfield Livestock Marketing Center, Springfield, Mo., reported receipts of 2,808 head Jan. 16, compared to 2,000 head last week, according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo. Compared to last week, steers and heifers under 600 pounds were $1 to $2 higher, with those over 600 pounds steady to $2 lower. Holsteins were not well tested. A heavy supply of high quality yearling steers put pressure on the heavier cattle. Many weaned and vaccinated calves on hand caused fleshy and fresh-weaned calves to carry heavy discounts. Approaching rain and falling temperatures in the southwest provided an incentive to get the cattle to town. Cattle weighing over 600 pounds represented 60% of the run compared to 37% last week. Steers made up 52% of the run, heifers 40%, Holsteins 3% and bulls 5%.
