Meatpacker plans to enlarge

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP)--A $2 million expansion project is planned at the John Morrell meatpacking plant in Sioux Falls.

The company has filed for a permit that would allow the livestock pen area to be enlarged by 6,685 square feet.

Morrell announced a $100 million expansion plan two years ago for its pork operations in Sioux Falls, but those plans were later put on hold.

Although expansion of the pen area is nowhere near the scope of the earlier plan, a city official says it's a significant investment.
