West Plains regional sales

The Ozarks Regional Stockyard, West Plains, Mo., reported receipts of 4,500 head Jan. 15, compared to 3,866 head last week and 1,056 head last year, according to the USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo.

Compared to last week, the majority of steers and heifers were $2 to $3 lower. Even though there were some 4 weight calves and 7 weight steers that sold about steady, however, several sales of less desirable offerings were $4 to $5 lower. The supply was moderate. Demand was uneven as buyers sorted through quality, color and condition pretty extensively, yet could be fairly aggressive for the so called "right kind". The market improved throughout much of the day until a few buyers began finishing loads. The supply consisted of 49% steers, 51% heifers with 39% over 600 pounds.
