St. Onge livestock sales

The St. Onge Livestock Sales Co., Ltd., St. Onge, S.D., reported receipts of 1,351 head Jan. 11, compared to 1,053 head last week, according to the USDA-South Dakota Department of Agriculture Market News, Sioux Falls, S.D.

Compared to last week, feeder cattle were lightly tested, therefore trends were not applicable. Feeding cows sold $1 to $2 lower. Slaughter cows sold mostly steady to $2 lower. Slaughter bulls sold $1 to $2 lower. Demand was moderate to good on all classes. The feeder supply was comprised of 44% steers, 14% feeder bulls and 42% heifers with 86% over 600 pounds. Receipts included about 6% feeder cattle, 40% feeding cows, 44% bred cattle, 5% slaughter cows and bulls with the balance other miscellaneous cattle.

Feeder steers: Medium and large frame 1, 17 head, 687 lbs., 96.50 calves. Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 7 head, 606 lbs., 95.00 calves.

Feeder heifers: Medium and large frame 1, 5 head, 552 lbs., 95.00; 11 head, 620 lbs., 94.50 calves. Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 11 head, 617 lbs., 88.00 calves.

Feeder bulls: Medium and large frame 1, 9 head, 662 lbs., 89.50 to 91.00 (90.33) calves.

Feeding cows: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, heiferettes, 825 to 1000 lbs., 76.00 to 88.00; 3 to 4 years old, 950 to 1175 lbs., 64.00 to 68.00; young, 950 to 1000 lbs., 59.00 to 63.00; middle aged, 1050 to 1350 lbs., 43.00 to 48.00; aged, 1100 to 1350 lbs., 38.50 to 42.75. Large frame 1, 1400 to 1550 lbs 40.50 to 44.00.

Slaughter cows: Breakers, 75 to 80% lean, 1425 to 1600 lbs., 44.00 to 46.50; low dressing, 40.25 to 43.50. Boners, 80 to 85% lean, 1350 to 1800 lbs., 41.00 to 42.50. Lean, 85 to 90% lean, 1000 to 1250 lbs., 35.00 to 38.50; low dressing, 34.75.

Slaughter bulls: Yield grade 1 to 2, 1550 to 2405 lbs., 52.50 to 56.00; high dressing, 57.75 to 58.00; low dressing, 48.50 to 51.75.

Bred heifers: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, bred black-red, calve February to April, price per head, 145 head, 900 to 1165 lbs., black-black whiteface-red, 875.00 to 1125.00.

Bred cows: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, bred black-red, calve March to April, price per head, 125 head, 1100 to 1350 lbs., 3 to 5 years old, black-black whiteface-red, 850.00 to 1100.00; 140 head, 1250 to 1400 lbs., 6 to 8 years old, black-black whiteface-red, 730.00 to 1050.00; 120 head, 1175 to 1550 lbs., broken, black-black whiteface-red, 540.00 to 705.00
