Springfield cattle sales report

The Springfield Livestock Marketing Center, Springfield, Mo., reported receipts of 2,000 head Jan. 9, compared to 1,600 head last week and 3,422 head last year, according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo.

Compared to last week, feeder steers over 550 pounds and heifers over 700 pounds sold $2 to $4 lower. Lightweight steer calves traded steady to $4 higher with heifers under 700 pounds selling steady to weak. Holstein steers had no comparison from last week, but prices were steady to $5 lower than they were before the holiday break. Severe weather earlier in the week curbed receipts, tornadoes, high winds, and flooding rains plagued the local area. Supplies are expected to be much heavier next week, weather permitting. The offering included 53% steers, 38% heifers, 6% bulls, and only 3% Holstein steers, with around 37% of the cattle weighed over 600 pounds.
