2007 row crop summary releasedMontana Montana producers planted 84,000 acres of corn for all purposes in 2007, up 19,000 acres from 2006, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Montana Field Office. There were 82,000 acres harvested for all purposes in 2007, up from 63,000 in 2006. Corn harvested for grain, at 38,000 acres, was 20,000 acres higher than a year ago. The average yield was 145.0 bushels per acre, 1 bushel lower than last year. Grain production increased 110 percent from a year ago to 5.51 million bushels. Corn for silage harvested acres, at 44,000 acres, decreased 1,000 acres from last year. Corn silage yield was 23 tons per acre, 1 ton per acre above a year ago. The total corn for silage production was 1,012,000 tons, up 2 percent from a year ago. Sugar beet producers in Montana planted 47,500 acres in 2007, down 6,100 acres from the previous year. Harvested acreage amounted to 47,000 acres, down 1,500 acres from 2006. Yield decreased 2.3 tons per acre from last year to average 24.7 tons. Total production was 1.16 million tons, down 11 percent from the previous year. Fall potato production in Montana totaled 3.696 million cwt, up 5 percent from last year. Producers harvested 11,200 acres, 700 acres more than 2006. Potato yields decreased 5 cwt per acre from a year ago to 330 cwt. All hay harvested in Montana was up 290,000 acres from last year, to 2.55 million acres. All hay production was 5.15 million tons, up 7 percent from a year ago. Alfalfa hay harvested acreage was 1.65 million, up 6 percent from last season. The average yield was 2.30 tons per acre, which is 0.20 tons per acre higher than the previous year. Alfalfa hay production was 3.80 million tons, up 10 percent from last year. New seedings of alfalfa hay totaled 135,000 acres in 2007, up from 125,000 acres seeded in 2006. Other hay harvested was 900,000 acres, up 27 percent from 2006. The average yield was 1.50 tons per acre, unchanged from last year. Other hay production was 1.35 million tons, up 27 percent from last year. Montana hay stocks were estimated at 4.50 million tons on Dec. 1, 2007 up 10 percent from last year. U.S. corn for grain production in 2007 is estimated at 13.1 billion bushels, down 1 percent from the November forecast but 24 percent above 2006. The average U.S. grain yield is estimated at 151.1 bushels per acre, down 1.9 bushels from the November forecast but 2.0 bushels above 2006. The 2007 yield estimate is the second highest on record, behind 2004, while production is the largest on record as producers harvested the most corn acres for grain since 1933. Sugar beet production for the U.S. in 2007 is estimated at 31.9 million tons, 6 percent below the 2006 estimate but 1 percent above the November forecast. Estimated yield, at 25.6 tons per acre, is 0.5 ton lower than last year's record high yield and 0.2 ton below November. Growers harvested 1.25 million acres, 4 percent below last year. Area planted, at 1.27 million acres, is 7 percent below the 2006 estimate. U.S. all hay production of dry hay for 2007 is estimated at 150 million tons, up 2 percent from the October 1 forecast and up 6 percent from the 2006 total. Area harvested, at 61.6 million acres, is down slightly from the October forecast but up 1 percent from 2006. The average yield, at 2.44 tons per acre, is up 0.05 ton from October and up 0.10 ton from the previous year. U.S. alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures hay production in 2007 is estimated at 72.6 million tons, up slightly from the October 1 forecast and less than 1 percent above 2006. Harvested area, at 21.7 million acres, is 1 percent above the October forecast and the previous year. The average yield is 3.35 tons per acre, 0.02 ton below the previous forecast and 0.01 ton below 2006. Growers seeded 2.83 million acres of alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures during 2007, down 11 percent from the 2006 seeded area of 3.18 million acres. The new seedings of alfalfa and alfalfa mixtures will normally be harvested for the first time in the year following planting. U.S. all other hay production in 2007 totaled 77.7 million tons, up 3 percent from the October 1 forecast and up 11 percent from 2006. Area for harvest, at 40.0 million acres, is down 1 percent from October but 1 percent above last year. The average yield is estimated at 1.95 tons per acre, up 0.08 ton from October and up 0.17 ton from last year. Stocks of all hay stored on farms totaled 104 million tons on Dec. 1, 2007, up 8 percent from a year ago. Disappearance of hay from May-December 2007 totaled 61.3 million tons, compared with 67.1 million tons for the same period a year ago. 1/21/08 Date: 1/16/08
