2007 crop production summary releasedKansas Corn production for grain totaled a record 518.0 million bushels, up 4 percent from the November 2007 forecast, and 50 percent above last year's production. The yield averaged 140 bushels per acre, 1 bushel above the November 2007 forecast and 25 bushels above the 2006 yield. Planted area was 3.90 million acres, up 550,000 acres from the previous year. Acreage harvested for grain, at 3.70 million acres, was up 700,000 acres from the area harvested in 2006. The current acreages of corn planted and harvested for grain are the highest levels since 1936 and 1933 respectively. Corn silage production, at 2.52 million tons, was 30 percent below the production of 3.60 million tons in 2006. Production of sorghum for grain in Kansas totaled 212.0 million bushels in 2007. Production was 67.0 million bushels above last year. The yield, at 80 bushels per acre, was down 1 bushel from the November 2007 forecast but 22 bushels higher than a year earlier. This year's yield ties with 1998 for the record. Kansas farmers planted 2.80 million acres, up 50,000 from last year. Harvested area for grain was 2.65 million acres, up 150,000 from 2006. Sorghum silage production, at 1.12 million tons, was up 87 percent from last year. Production of Kansas soybeans totaled 84.2 million bushels in 2007. This was down slightly from the November 2007 forecast and 14.4 million bushels below last year's production. Yield per acre was 33 bushels, down 1 bushel from November 2007 but 1 bushel above 2006. Harvested acreage was 2.55 million acres, 17 percent below the acres harvested last year. Production of all types of hay was 6.37 million tons, down 1.23 million tons from the previous forecast, and 180,000 tons less than the previous year. Alfalfa production, at 2.80 million tons, was down 22 percent from the 2006 crop of 3.61 million tons. Other hay production, at 3.57 million tons, was down 13 percent from the October forecast but up 21 percent from last year. Alfalfa acreage harvested was down 100,000 acres from the October forecast and 150,000 less than 2006. Other hay harvested decreased 50,000 acres from the October forecast but was unchanged from a year earlier. Wheat production was 283.8 million bushels, down 3 percent from the 2006 crop. Acres planted totaled 10.4 million, up 600,000 acres from 2006. Acreage harvested, at 8.6 million acres, was down 500,000 acres from the previous year.
