Salina cattle auction report

The Farmers and Ranchers Livestock Commission Co., Salina, Kan., reported receipts of 3,658 head Jan. 3, compared to 4,352 head last sale and 2,990 head last year, according to the USDA-Kansas Department of Agriculture Market News, Dodge City, Kan.

Compared with the last sale Dec. 20, steers at 400 to 950 pounds were $4 to $8 lower. The few Medium and large frame 1 heifers, at 600 to 800 pounds were steady, with the bulk of the trade at 400 to 800 pounds selling $4 to $8 lower. Few instances of steers and heifers that showed signs of winter stress, excessive flesh and/or fill were $8 to $12 lower. Slaughter cows and bulls were not tested. Trade and demand were moderate. Receipts included 86% 600 pounds and over, 13% 600 pounds and under, 1% slaughter cows and bulls. The feeder supply included 65% steers and 35% heifers.
