Hay trading moderately

In Kansas, the hay trade is moderate. Demand moderate to strong for alfalfa pellets, dairy alfalfa and stock cow quality hay, moderate for grinding alfalfa and prairie hay, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Jan. 8. Prices given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.

Southwest:

Dairy/grinding alfalfa steady. Movement active. Horse alfalfa, in small squares, $150-$215, mostly, $180-$215; supreme dairy, $150-$170; premium, $140-$150; good, $120-$140; fair/good, stock cow, $100-$120, Utility/fair, $90-$105. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, edge of the field, $80-$95. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots and dairies, $110-$120, mostly, $110-$115. For the week ending Dec. 29, 14,279 tons of grinding alfalfa and 1,625 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered. Good sudan or cane, in large squares or rounds, $60-$70, an instance, $85. Bermuda, in large squares, $120; Straw, in large squares, $50.

South central:

Dairy/grinding alfalfa and alfalfa pellets steady. Movement moderate to active. Horse alfalfa, in small squares, $200, in medium squares, $175; supreme dairy, $145-$165; premium, $120-$145; good, stock cow, $100-$120, grassy, $900-$100. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, edge of the field, $70-$80, $90 delivered, Utility, $55-$65. Ground and delivered locally to feedlots, $100-$120. For the week ending Dec. 29, 4,986 tons of grinding alfalfa and 875 tons of dairy alfalfa were delivered. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 15% protein, $140-$160; 17% protein, $150-$165; dehydrated, 17% protein, $195. Straw, good, in large squares, $45-$50. Sudan, in large squares, $55-$65, in large rounds, $50-$65. Milo stalks, in large bales, $55.

Southeast:

Alfalfa, brome and prairie hay steady. Movement moderate to active. Horse and goat alfalfa, in small or medium squares, $155-$160, clippings, in medium squares, $180-$200. Supreme dairy alfalfa, $175 or 90 cents/point RFV; premium, $125; Good, stock cow, $100-$125. Good bluestem, in small squares, $90 to mostly, $100, in medium and large squares, $80-$90, a little, $100, in large rounds, $55-$60. Good brome, in small squares, $90-$120, mostly, $100-$110, in medium and large squares, $85-$100, in large rounds, $60-$70. Sudan, in medium squares, $90. CWF grass mulch, in large rounds, $50.

Northwest:

Dairy/grinding alfalfa steady. Movement moderate to active. Horse alfalfa, in small squares, $180-$200, in medium squares, $160-$175; supreme dairy, $140-$150; premium, $125-$135; good, $110-$125; Good, stock cow, $95-$115; fair, in large rounds, $80-$85. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, edge of the field, $75-$85; Ground and delivered to feedlots and dairies, $110-$125. Sudan-cane, good, in large squares, $65-$70, in large rounds, $55-$65, BMR, in large rounds, $70. Cornstalks, in large squares. $45-$50. Milo stalks, in large bales, $50-$60. Straw, in small squares, $2/bale.

North central/northeast:

Dairy/grinding alfalfa, prairie hay and brome steady. Movement moderate. Horse alfalfa, in small squares, $185-$200, in medium squares, $165-$185; supreme dairy, $140-$170, an instance, $180; premium, $130-$150; good, $95-$135. Utility/fair grinding alfalfa, edge of the field, $65-$75, ground on truck, $80-$100. Good bluestem grass hay, in small squares, $90-$100, in medium squares, $75-$90, in large rounds, $55-$60. Premium brome, in small squares $110-$130; good, in small squares, $90-$110, in medium squares, $80-$100, in large rounds, $60-$80; fair, in large rounds, $50-$60. Straw, in small squares, $2.50-$3/bale, in large bales, $35-$60. Sudan, good, in large rounds, $65. Corn stalks, $35-$40. Milo stalks, in large rounds, $40.
