Grain dealers convene in Fargo

The North Dakota Grain Dealers Association will hold its 96th Annual Convention and Industry Show at the Fargo Holiday Inn Jan. 20 to 22. Approximately 900 to 1000 people are expected for the event, consisting of grain elevator managers, farmers, grain industry personnel, and spouses. The meeting includes educational sessions, business meetings, entertainment, and a trade show of 81 companies providing products and services to the grain industry.

North Dakota Senator Byron Dorgan is on the program to speak about federal railroad legislation he and scores of other members of Congress are promoting. Dorgan describes the legislation as necessary to guide the federal Surface Transportation Board in protecting rail customers. STB Vice Chairman Francis Mulvey will also speak at the convention about recent actions of his agency.

Ron Olson, vice president of operations for General Mills and current chairman of the National Grain and Feed Association will make a presentation about Risk Management in Volatile Markets. The huge swings in commodity prices in the past year have created greater risk for grain buyers. Olson will also present his views on the future of Biotech Grains.

Dr. David Swenson of Iowa State University will speak about Ethanol Realities. He spoke at the January 2007 Grain Dealers convention about overly optimistic projections for the industry and potential fallouts, some of which have occurred recently.

Streeter, N.D., farmer Alan Ruff will relate his near-death experience trapped up to his neck in sunflowers in a grain bin. The Association stresses using known safety precautions when entering grain bins. Also speaking to safety aspects of operating grain elevators will be Travis Clark of the Occupational Safety and Health Area Office in Bismarck.

Trent Loos, host of the Loos Tales radio program is the featured speaker at a banquet Jan. 21. A number of other entertainment/motivational speakers and entertainment groups will perform at the convention

Chair couple for this year's convention is Steve and Lisa Hepper of Mandan, N.D. Steve is the grain and seed manager at Hubbard Feeds in Bismarck.

The Association is governed by a 9-man board of elevator managers from around the state. Current Association officers, directors, and staff are:

Clyde Krebs, Glen Ullin, president; Myron Uttermark, Harlow, 1st vice president; Dan DeRouchey, Berthold, 2nd vice president; Tony Johannesen, Edgeley, director; Todd Vogel, Marion, director; Pete Peterson, Dahlen, director; Dave Rosscup, Cavalier, director; Roger Wagner, Grafton, director; Paul Lautenschlager, Beach, director; Steve Strege, Fargo, executive vice president; Cheryal Welle, Fargo, executive assistant; Stu Letcher, Hatton, safety and health director; Hal Grieve, Buffalo, safety specialist; Sue Benson, Fargo, office assistant.
