Annual Dairy Profit seminars offered across the state in late FebruaryMissouri The annual Dairy Profit seminars will be held in five dairy areas across the state in late February, said Barry Steevens, University of Missouri Extension dairy nutritionist. This is one more than in past years. Feed and feed costs receive first attention when cutting costs, Steevens said. But other topics include cow health, pregnancy rates and heifer development programs. Meeting registrations start at 9:30 a.m. with first talk at 10 a.m. Sessions will adjourn by 3:30 p.m. so producers can get home by milking time, Steevens said. A $20 registration fee which includes lunch is payable at the door. Advance registration with local coordinator is requested. The seminars are sponsored by the Missouri Dairy Association, MU Commercial Agriculture and MU Extension. Theme will be "Dairying is Our Business." Steevens and Joe Horner, agricultural economist, will open with a discussion on controlling feed costs. Next Dr. David Hill, veterinarian, will talk on the principles of mastitis control. He is a technical services manager with Schering-Plough Animal Health. Dave Drennan, of the Missouri Dairy Association, will give an update on dairy happenings in 2008. During a lunch break, participants can view exhibits on display. Participants can bring samples of their dairy total mixed rations for analysis of particle size by MU specialists during the noon break. Dr. Scott Poock, veterinarian with the MU Extension and Commercial Agriculture, will tell how "Pregnancy and Profitability" go hand in hand. Horner will return to tell of "Money Left on the Table with Current Heifer Production System." The dairy economist will suggest alternative heifer development plans. In conclusion, Alfredo D'Ascoli, of Oi Dry Corporation, will talk on "Mycotoxins--The Silent Thieves." 1/14/08 Date: 1/10/08
