Springfield dairy heifer sale

The Springfield Livestock Marketing Center, Springfield, Mo., Jan. 22, reported receipts of 579 head of dairy cattle, compared to 577 head last month and 570 head last year according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News, Jefferson City, Mo.

This was a special dairy heifer sale. Demand was moderate. The supply was light due to icy conditions. The sale included 20% springer heifers, 20% bred heifers, 15% open heifers, 3% fresh and milking cows, 10% bred and springer cows, and 2% calves. All were Holsteins unless noted otherwise. Prices were per head.

Springer heifers: Bred seven to nine months, Supreme 1900.00 to 2325.00, Crossbreds 1600.00 to 2050.00. Approved 1500.00 to 1875.00, individual Jersey 1650.00, individual brown Swiss 1675.00, Crossbreds 1250.00 to 1575.00. Medium 1200.00 to 1425.00, Crossbreds 1000.00 to 1200.00. Common 635.00 to 1000.00.

Heifers: Bred three to six months, Supreme 1800.00 to 2250.00, individual Crossbred 1700.00. Approved 1375.00 to 1750.00, individual Jersey 1500.00, Crossbreds 960.00 to 1525.00. Medium 1000.00 to 1275.00. Common 475.00 to 985.00. Bred one to three months, Supreme 1600.00 to 1770.00. Approved 1285.00 to 1500.00. Medium 800.00 to 975.00. Common 400.00 to 625.00.

Open heifers: Approved 200 to 400 lbs., Few 410.00 to 500.00; 400 to 600 lbs., 970.00 to 1190.00, Crossbreds 625.00 to 700.00; 600 to 700 lbs., 1075.00 to 1125.00; 700 to 800 lbs., 1050.00 to 1370.00.

Replacement cows: Fresh and milking cows, Approved, few 1375.00 to 1550.00. Medium, few 975.00 to 1150.00. Common 410.00 to 690.00.

Springer cows: Bred seven to nine months, Approved 1400.00 to 1750.00, individual Crossbred 1650.00. Medium 1050.00 to 1350.00, few Crossbreds 810.00 to 1275.00. Common 810.00 to 950.00.

Cows: Bred one to six months, Approved 1125.00 to 1200.00. Medium 825.00 to 1000.00, Crossbreds., few 825.00 to 835.00.

Baby calves: Too few in any class to quote prices.
