Roundtable crosses borders to discuss key issues facing cattle industry

Colorado

The Colorado Department of Agriculture and the Consulate General of Canada in Denver hosted a roundtable to discuss local and international issues facing today's cattle industry.

Eighty industry leaders and students gathered Jan. 20, at the National Western Stock Show complex. The program was led by Colorado Commissioner of Agriculture John Stulp and Consul General of Canada Dale Eisler.

"This country's largest trading partner is Canada with more than $1.5 billion in goods crossing our borders everyday. Trade between Canada and the United States helps both countries to be even more successful in the global market," said Stulp.

The dialog covered a variety of cattle-related issues including border regulations, bovine spongiform encephalopathy, country-of-origin labeling, animal disease mitigation and the farm bill. The topics were discussed in an open, lively manner to better facilitate the goal of the roundtable.

"The cattle industry has a tradition of being the cornerstone of Colorado's agriculture economy; it is vital communication continues with our Canadian neighbors," continued Stulp.

"The trade relationship between our two countries is so important that it demands we have open lines of communication and ongoing dialogue on key issues. I believe the roundtable was an example of how we can share ideas, perspective and relevant information," said Eisler.

According to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, the United States and Canada are each other's largest trading partners. In 2006, two-way trade in goods surpassed $530 billion. Colorado-Canada agricultural trade reached nearly $365 million in 2006. Furthermore:

--Colorado imports from Canada totaled $184.5 million including $94.9 million in live bovine, $14.4 million in pork and $11.7 million in baking related goods.

--Colorado exports to Canada total $180.4 million including $89.1 million in beef, $46.4 million in pork and $14.1 million in food preparations.
