Joplin regional livestock reportThe Joplin Regional Stockyards, Joplin, Mo., reported receipts of 6,100 head Jan. 27, compared to 4,400 head last week and 6,140 head last year, according to the Missouri Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Jefferson City, Mo. Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers traded $2 to $5 higher, with the exception of 500- to 600-pound heifers which traded $5 to $7 higher. Holsteins were not tested. Trade opened strong and continued to build momentum throughout the day, with most weights and classes of feeders easily surpassing last week's top prices. Still, many buyers were counting on fed cattle trade making significant gains in order for this week's purchases to turn a profit. The supply was moderate. Demand was good, seemingly best for 500- to 700-pound feeders. The supply consisted of 61% steers and bulls and 39% heifers, with 60% over 600 pounds.
