Congressional funding measure keeps CRP rolls open

Kansas

The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2008, signed into law on Dec. 26, 2007, provides a continuation of Conservation Reserve Program Authority from Jan. 1 through March 15, 2008.

"That's good news for landowners interested in all forms of the Conservation Reserve Program, including the 10-county Upper Arkansas River Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program," said Bill Fuller, State Executive Director of the Kansas Farm Service Agency.

County FSA offices may continue to accept offers and the FSA County Committees may continue to approve contracts.

More than 12,000 acres were offered for enrollment in the first seven business days of sign-up (Dec. 20-31, 2007) for the federal Upper Arkansas River Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program intended to conserve water, protect soil and enhance wildlife habitat. Current program authority caps the 10-county enrollment at 20,000 acres with no more than 5,000 acres per county.

"I encourage landowners interested in the program to apply even if the county acreage number tops 5,000. They'll be next in line should earlier enrollees drop out or if the program is expanded," Fuller said.

The voluntary federal program augmented by state and local incentives is focused on the Upper Arkansas River corridor from the Kansas-Colorado line to just east of Great Bend. CREP is administered federally by USDA's Farm Service Agency and at the state level by the State Conservation Commission.

For more details contact the local FSA county office.
