Just a scoop full(Jan. 30)--Hats off to all the rural and city firefighters. We often forget how important they are until we have a major problem. Several days ago there was a fire that started just south of Slapout, Okla. The winds were extremely strong that day. (I rode on the back of a firetruck, one day, fighting a grass fire a few years ago. Right then I realized how dangerous it could be--traveling amongst smoke in unknown areas.) The other day there were up to 90 different units fighting this fire. Keep up the good work and remember to support your local firefighters. A friend of mine, who is an order buyer, said about 15 years ago he was buying a lot of calves off the ranch in a state east of Oklahoma. One day after receiving one rancher's calves, a sheriff's car pulled up to the pens. The order buyer walked over to the sheriff and asked if there was a problem. The order buyer was nervous as he had been sneaking these trucks in the back way. The sheriff responded, "There's no problem--I just want to sell you my calves." So the two of them went to look at the sheriff's calves. After the order buyer looked at his calves, he said, "I have to be honest--your calves are plainer than I have been buying." The sheriff said, "I am sure of that." The order buyer said, "What do you want for your calves then?" The sheriff responded, "Fifty cents a hundred more than anyone else has gotten." The order buyer said, "There's no way I can do that." The sheriff said, "Let me explain. You've got four trucks sitting here right now. It appears you've been bringing them in the back way for a reason. I am quite sure I can find some problem with every one of your trucks." The order buyer said, "Let me think for just a moment." Then he said, "Mr. Sheriff I believe your calves were better than I thought. I believe I will take them."
