Warm up your ovens and the hearts of others

Bake and Take Day is scheduled for March 22

Nebraska

Bake and Take Day, traditionally celebrated the fourth Saturday in March, is scheduled for March 22. However, observance of Bake and Take Day can occur any day. The importance is not the date. The importance is the feeling that comes when you warm your oven and the hearts of others.

If you are not familiar with this event, Bake and Take Day is a time to bake an item and then take it to someone to let them know you're thinking about them. This "someone" can be a friend, neighbor, co-worker or family member. Many organizations and individuals participate in Bake and Take Day as a community service project to demonstrate their care and concern for the elderly or shut-ins. Time spent visiting with the recipient is equally as important as the baked item. Remember to obtain permission from shelters, nursing homes or other institutions if you plan to deliver baked goods there.

Each year the Nebraska Wheat Board distributes recipes and stickers free of charge to organizations and individuals as a way to assist in the celebration of this event. Materials are provided in any quantity. It is suggested that a pamphlet be given to the recipient and a sticker be used on the wrapping of the home-baked item.

To request pamphlets and stickers, contact the Nebraska Wheat Board at 301 Centennial Mall South, PO Box 94921 , Lincoln, NE 68509; call 402-471-2358; or e-mail nwb@wheat.ne.gov. Please include your name, mailing address and quantity of pamphlets and stickers desired.
