CWF deadline approachingColorado The deadline for applications for the Citizenship Washington Focus for Colorado 4-H members is fast approaching. Applications are due in the Colorado State 4-H Office in Fort Collins, March 3 and can be picked up at local Extension offices across the state or online at www.colorado4h.org/events_opportunities/cwf/index.shtml. Citizenship Washington Focus is a 4-H leadership program for high school youth. For a duration of seven weeks of the summer, delegations of 15 through 19-year-olds from across the country can take their 4-H experience to another level through CWF on a six-day intensive summer citizenship program at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center in Washington, D.C. CWF is aimed at enriching young people's lives by broadening their appreciation and respect for themselves and others in the world. Delegates learn about the democratic process and their role as citizens while they experience our nation's capital. Participants attend workshops, committees, field trips and social events, giving them hands-on opportunities to learn and grow. 4-Hers get the inside scoop about how government really works from prominent guest speakers and may even have the opportunity to have a photo with their congressman. College-age program fellows lead bill writing workshops, a national issues forum and mock elections and congressional sessions that prepare 4-H members for leadership now and in the future. CWF delegates learn and practice skills that will make them better citizens and more successful individuals. Adult volunteer 4-H leaders can also be a part of this experience by accompanying the delegation as a chaperone. A recent 4-H delegate from Colorado had this to say about CWF: "Attending CWF is the experience of a lifetime. Visiting Colorado's representatives and viewing the beautiful monuments gave me a greater appreciation for both our nation's history and current direction. The unique environment of CWF allowed me to forge friendships with people across the country. I returned home from CWF a changed person--one who is both more confident and politically and socially aware." 2/25/08 Date: 2/20/08
