A gathering for gardeners set in Hutchinson March 1

Kansas

A day filled with free gardening information for homeowners and gardeners has been scheduled for March 1. This is the 19th year for the event entitled "A Gathering for Gardeners." The Hutchinson Horticulture Club organizes and sponsors this event each year as their educational project for the community. It is being held at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church at 407 East 12th, just west of the Cosmosphere.

Doors open at 8:30 a.m., with the morning session beginning at 9 a.m. The first topic is "Improving Garden Soil" by James Taylor, retired instructor at Hutchinson Community College. Taylor will tell us what we can do to improve soil structure and health, which in turn will lead to healthier and more vigorous plants. Next at 10 a.m., the topic of "Butterflies and Butterfly Gardening" will be presented by Pat McKernan, landscape supervisor at Botanica. He will introduce us to many native butterflies that inhabit Botanica's Butterfly House during the summer months and discuss various aspects of their Butterfly Garden. The last morning presentation will start at 11 a.m. Dr. Ted Carey, vegetable specialist for K-State Research and Extension, will present "Timely Tips for Vegetable Gardening." From time tables to variety selection, he will help us get off to a good start on tomatoes and other vegetables.

The afternoon program will resume at 1 p.m. with "Lawn Advice Based on K-State Research" by Dr. Rodney Saint John, turf specialist for K-State Research and Extension. He will list recommended turf varieties and explain how to attain a healthy, full lawn. The next topic at 2 p.m., should help those individuals who want to incorporate even more color in their landscape. Dr. Alan Stevens, director of K-State Horticulture Research centers at Hays, Wichita and Olathe, will present, "Fanciful Foliage to Complement Colorful Flowers." He has been doing extensive test trials during the past several years to identify "Prairie Star Annals" and "Prairie Bloom Perennials" that perform well in our Kansas climate. He is also testing plants with colorful or unique foliage features to add to our gardens. The last presentation of the day begins at 3 p.m. The topic of "Landscaping: Putting it all together!" will be presented by Debbie Graber, landscape designer at Bornholdt Plantland. She will explain how to look at our landscapes to develop better plans that demand less work and time.

There will be no charge to attend any of the "Gathering for Gardeners" program although registration at the door is requested. Door prize drawings will be held throughout the day. The program is designed so individuals may attend any or all of the topics at their appointed times.
