Just a scoop full(Feb. 13)--Psychology and momentum seems to play a big role in the cattle business. Since the first of the year--every week we have gotten a little higher on stocker and feeder cattle. It appeared to me that the only way we were going to change the attitude to a more aggressive market was two main factors. It appeared we either had to raise the fat cattle price several dollars per hundred or lower corn prices substantially. Neither one has changed that much. Cattle feeders have realized in our area feeder cattle numbers are scarce and will stay that way for several months, thus making late summer and fall more attractive for a better fat cattle market. Grazing cattle prices have picked up to being $10 to $15 per cwt. higher than a month ago. It is amazing to see how much better most cattlemens' attitude is than it was two weeks ago. I'm not saying that the attitude is extremely aggressive but it is easy to see the improvement. A man that works for me at the sale barn and I were visiting. He said, "You know I have spent most of my life in a sale barn." He said, " I have noticed that some sale barns want their friends to be able to buy cheap cattle." He said "I've also noticed that you do not do that." He stated that he thought he knew why. I quickly asked him why he thought that was. He said, "I think it's 'cause--you don't have any friends."
