Larry Mitchell receives Carl L. King Award from ACGAThe American Corn Growers Association awarded its most prestigious honor, the "Carl L. King Award", to Larry Mitchell at ACGA's twenty-first anniversary convention in Milwaukee on Jan. 19. Mitchell, a charter member of ACGA since 1987, has served with ACGA since 2001 as ACGA's Chief Executive Officer and now as their Director of Governmental Affairs. The award is named for Texas corn grower Carl King who founded ACGA 21 years ago and served as chairman of the ACGA board for many years. Keith Bolin, President of ACGA, proclaimed, "Larry Mitchell was awarded the honor for his tireless work and loyalty, for his commitment to families on the land, and for his seven years of dedication to the American Corn Growers." King, now the Chairman Emeritus of ACGA, was also president of the Texas Corn Growers Association, an organization pre-dating ACGA, for 27 years. He led corn growers in opposition to GATT, WTO and other poorly negotiated free trade agreements because they were inadequate for U.S. producers. King worked for domestic farm programs to help producers, not global grain traders. His policy approach focused on low-cost farm programs providing grower income from the marketplace, not taxpayers, an approach still strongly supported by ACGA members going into the 2007 farm bill debate. Other ACGA award presentations were made to: --Congressman Collin Peterson, D-MN, and Chairman of U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Agriculture, received the ACGA "Friend of the Farmer Award," --Mark Lounsbery, a corn farmer and charter member of ACGA, from Revillo, S.D., received the "ACGA Appreciation Award," --Michael Pollan, a contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine, a former executive editor for Harper's Magazine, and author of five books: In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto (2008) The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals (2006), The Botany of Desire: A Plant's-Eye View of the World (2001), A Place of My Own (1997), and Second Nature: A Gardener's Education (1991) received the ACGA "Truth in Agricultural Journalism Award," and --David L Senter, a family farm advocate, former fourth generation Texas farmer, charter member and cofounder of ACGA, received the ACGA "Heroes of American Agriculture Award," The American Corn Growers Association represents 14,000 members in 35 states.
