Circovirus vaccine receives two-week immunity onset claimBoehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc., St. Joseph, Mo., announces the U.S. Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has approved a two-week onset of immunity claim for its single dose Ingelvac CircoFLEX vaccine. The two-week onset of immunity claim allows pigs to quickly develop protection against porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) infection early in the nursery. According to Klaas Okkinga, marketing manager for Boehringer Ingelheim, PCV2 frequently starts multiplying and causing damage early in the nursery. Therefore, active immunity early in life is very important. A single vaccination with Ingelvac CircoFLEX at three weeks of age is the only PCV2 vaccine option that provides protection as early as five weeks of age. "This quick onset of immunity claim prevents economic damage caused by early PCV2 infection in the nursery," Okkinga said. "In addition, research shows that PCV2 infection may reduce the efficacy of other vaccines, which would have a significant impact on overall herd health and production. Therefore, if pigs are protected against PCV2 infection early in the nursery, they may also respond better to other vaccinations. "Currently, Ingelvac CircoFLEX is the only PCV2 vaccine available that combines a duration of immunity of four months with a two-week onset of immunity claim and other important benefits for producers," Okkinga added.
