HINTS AND HELPS FROM PENNYWISEUntie shoe lace knots: To loosen a knot in a shoe lace, sprinkle some bath/baby powder on the knot and work it around with your fingers. It will almost untie itself. Basement safety tip: As a precaution against falling, paint the bottom step a bright white. It makes it easy to see that last step and avoid the fall. Save that furniture: A reader wrote: "I have a cat with claws that likes to scratch at the couch and chairs. To solve this problem, I bought some matching nylon net at the fabric store and wrapped the bottom parts of the furniture for a few days. The cat HATES the net because it gets his claws hung up in the net. He now leaves my furniture alone and goes to his scratching post. Cheap mouthwash: An old fashioned mouthwash can be made from noting more than equal parts of lemon or lime juice and water (a little pucker power), but it's very inexpensive and won't fill you with chemicals if you happen to swallow the stuff. Boot bonanza: This is a tip for ladies or girls with wide feet that have a hard time finding/buying snow boots or overshoes. Check the boys/mens section of your local department store. The styles are much the same and the shoes/boots are wider. (If you shop after Christmas, these items are usually on sale/closeout because the store is getting in spring merchandise). Fan belt fix: Got a fan belt that squeeks? Try putting a couple of drops of antifreeze on the belt and that should stop it. Brass cleaner: I have some old brass candle holders that were my grandmother's. They sat in a box for years until I bought my first home and wanted to use them. They were so badly tarnished I didn't know if they could ever be cleaned up. A kindly neighbor told me to use lemon and soda to clean them. You cut a lemon into quarters and dip them into the soda poured on a saucer. Use the lemon like a sponge and the soda like scouring powder. It worked beautifully. You do need to rinse the pieces with clear water after the soda scrub. 2/18/08 Date: 2/11/08
