Top speakers to speak at goat conference

Arkansas

If you're interested in raising meat and dairy goats, you can learn how to raise them successfully by attending the 2008 Arkansas Goat Conference Feb. 16, at the Natural Resources Building in Conway.

Goats are the fastest-growing livestock enterprise in the United States, said Dr. Jodie Pennington, professor-dairy and goats with the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service.

"The conference will provide participants with the basic information they need on topics such as commercial meat goat production, internal parasite control, health management, kidding management, forage and pasture management, where to market goats and showing goats at county fairs," said Pennington.

Speakers include Dr. Bruce Olcott, sheep and goat breeder and veterinarian from the veterinary school at Louisiana State University, and Dr. Jim Miller, professor of veterinary medicine at LSU.

Extension speakers include Pennington and Newton County Agent Jack Boles. Their talks also will cover getting started in goat production. An afternoon producer panel will discuss how to market goats successfully.

Several award-winning youth show exhibitors will discuss how to fit and show goats at county, district and state fairs.

Pennington said the goat conference would be preceded by a fecal egg workshop from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Feb. 15, at the Natural Resources Building. Miller will conduct the workshop. The Natural Resources Building is at 110 S. Amity Rd. (the access road east of Interstate 40) between exits 127 and 129.

The conference begins at 8:15 a.m. with registration and ends at 4 p.m. Registration is $10 (including lunch) if you pre-register by Feb. 10. It's $15 at the door, including lunch. You may pre-register with your county extension office or send your registration to Dr. Jodie Pennington at the U of A Cooperative Extension Service, P.O. Box 391, Little Rock, AR 72203. His e-mail is jpennington@uaex.edu.

The Cooperative Extension Service is part of the U of A Division of Agriculture.
