Cold JanuaryIowa Snow, ice, and cold weather stressed livestock outdoors, causing weight gains to slow, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Iowa Field Office, Feb. 4. No significant livestock losses were reported. The average depth of snow cover for the month of January was four inches. Frost penetration averaged 13 inches compared to last year's 15 inches. Soil moisture availability rated 1 percent very short, 3 percent short, 87 percent adequate, and 9 percent surplus. Grain movement for the state was 24 percent none, 35 percent light, 32 percent moderate, and 9 percent heavy. Availability of hay and roughage supplies was 21 percent short, 74 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus. Quality of hay and roughage supplies was 6 percent poor, 41 percent fair, and 53 percent good. Utilization of stubble fields for grazing rated 39 percent none, 35 percent limited, 19 percent moderate, and 7 percent extensive. Hog and pig losses in January were 17 percent below average, 80 percent average, and 3 percent above average. Cattle and calf losses were 20 percent below average, 76 percent average, and 4 percent above average. 2/11/08 Date: 2/6/08
