Bison the natural alternative to cloned meat products

'No carbon copy meat for our customers' says Bison association head

People seeking to feed their families meat products not sourced from cloned animals will find that assurance by looking for one word on their next purchase: Bison.

While the Food and Drug Administration announced in mid-January that meat from cloned cattle, swine and goats can be marketed to consumers, bison producers will continue to supply their customers with high-quality products produced through traditional animal husbandry.

"We are pleased that federal regulations will continue to prohibit any cloning in the bison meat business," said Dave Carter, executive director of the National Bison Association. "Our ranchers are committed to providing their customers with high quality natural meat produced through traditional breeding practices. Every cut of bison carries the unique flavor of the animal from which it was sourced. Simply put, there will be no carbon copy bison meat for our customers."

In its announcement this week, the FDA specified that it will not require any special labeling of meat products produced from cloned animals. Carter noted that the failure to require any special labeling is likely to compound confusion among consumers.

"People buying products containing only 100 percent bison meat can have the assurance that they are feeding their families meat that was produced without any cloning," he said.

Federal regulations have long prohibited the use of growth hormones in raising bison, and the industry standards prohibit the use of antibiotics as a growth promotant. In addition, the National Bison Association administers a source verification program which audits the compliance of participants with those prohibitions on growth hormones and growth-promoting antibiotics.
