Agricultural renewable energy, energy efficiency workshops Feb. 15 at Wagner High School

South Dakota

A first of its kind workshop in Wagner will focus on agricultural renewable energy, energy conservation and energy efficiency. Geared for farmers, ranchers and rural homeowners, this workshop features knowledgeable energy speakers from across South Dakota. Speakers teaming up for this educational workshop include two private firms, a farmer, South Dakota State University, the S.D. Public Utilities Commission, Charles Mix Electric Cooperative, Natural Resources Conservation Service, USDA Rural Development and the Cooperative Extension Service.

The informational workshop will run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., in the Wagner High School Auditorium since school is not in session that day. Randall Resource, Conservation and Development Coordinator Jeff Stewart, says, "We're getting the word out about some real energy saving measures that can be implemented now. We've lined up speakers to address the latest technology, equipment and operational methods currently available utilizing both renewable and traditional energy to reduce energy costs." All the information is aimed at making a farm operation or a rural home more energy efficient including the latest in energy estimator tools, energy audits, techniques and management will be covered."

Renewable energy opportunities that will be discussed will include small scale wind and solar energy for agricultural uses such as pumping water, powering fences and even the entire farmstead or rural home. Anaerobic digester use and opportunities will be discussed. There will be a down-to-earth talk on geothermal heating and cooling. Energy efficiency measures related to crop production and the use of cover crops, tillage, nitrogen use and grain drying will be covered. Livestock production and other animal energy efficiency measures such as improving livestock facilities and grazing management techniques will also be discussed.

Sponsors of this workshop include Randall Resource Conservation and Development Association, Charles Mix Conservation District, Wagner Economic Development, SDSU Cooperative Extension Service, SD Association of RC&D Councils, and the Natural Resources Conservation Service. Others involved include USDA Rural Development, Charles Mix Electric Cooperative, SD Public Utilities Commission and Douglas County Extension Service. A soup and sandwich lunch will be provided at the school with a minimal $5 registration to help defray costs. Participants are asked to park on the west side of the high school for an easier entrance.
