Stock dog training a featured topic at Missouri Livestock Symposium

Missouri

Once again the Missouri Livestock Symposium will feature programs on all species of livestock, forages, and stock dogs. According to Garry Mathes, Chair of the Missouri Livestock Symposium planning committee, there will be three talks given on stock dogs at this year's Symposium. The three talks will be on "Choosing the Right Dog," "Basic Cowdog Training," and "Advanced Cowdog Training." Laura Stimatze of Macksville, Kan., will be the speaker. Stimatze was born and raised in Kansas and was around 14 years old when she got her first Border Collie, Kip. She grew up around working stock dogs and her father, Bob Buckman, also of Macksville, Kan., trains stock dogs for a living. The Stimatze's have produced numerous winning trial dogs, hold annual seminars on training dogs, and take great pride in helping producers make their working dogs better. The stock dog programs will be held as part of the 2008 Missouri Livestock Symposium Dec. 6.

In addition to the stock dog programs, the Missouri Livestock Symposium will feature speakers from 16 states and Canada covering topics on horses, beef cattle, sheep, meat goats, forages, and renewable energies. In addition our around the home sessions will have talks on home grape production and wine making, quilting, and selecting heart healthy vegetable varieties.

According to Mathes, the Missouri Livestock Symposium is the "best deal going." There are no costs to attend, unless you want tickets for the John Anderson concert Dec. 6. A free beef supper will be held Dec. 5, and a free Governor's Style luncheon on Dec. 6 at noon. In addition, there is a sold out ag-related trade show both days and Trent Loos will "Speak Up for Agriculture" on Dec. 5 after the free beef meal.

The entire list of educational topics and speaker information may be found at http://missourilivestock.com or by calling 660-665-9866 or 660-341-6625. Dates and hours for the Livestock Symposium are Dec. 5 from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Dec. 6 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Missouri Livestock Symposium is held at the Kirksville Middle School in Kirksville, Mo.
