NBA to inaugurate Jr. Bison Judging Contest Jan. 20

The National Bison Association is pleased to announce inauguration of a national Jr. Judging Contest to be held Jan. 20, 2009 at noon, in conjunction with the NBA's Annual Gold Trophy Show and Sale. The contest will be held at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colo., and is open to all young people, ages 8 to 21. NBA membership is not required. Contestants must be academically eligible (passing all classes).

The best overall individual will be presented with a $1,000 scholarship. Awards also will be presented to first, second, and third place finishers in both the individual and team categories. Those entering the contest as individuals can be put on teams with other individual contestants.

"The National Bison Association would like potential producers to know more about the benefits of raising bison, and this contest is a fun and educational way to reach out to young people," said NBA Executive Director Dave Carter.

Inauguration of the judging contest is just one way the NBA is promoting the industry among young people. This summer the NBA Board of Directors decided to offer a junior membership at a discounted rate of $50 annually for young people ages 21 and under. Junior members can exhibit at the NBA's Gold Trophy Show and Sale. In addition, the NBA administers $4,000 in scholarships given annually by the Throlson American Bison Foundation.

According to Oklahoma Buffalo Association Representative Gerald Parsons who earlier in 2008 organized a junior bison judging contest in Oklahoma, the contest will be structured and the judging criteria will be similar to 4-H and FFA livestock judging contests.

"Livestock judging is very good training for young people," said Parsons. "Judging teaches critical thinking and analytical skills while enabling young people to hone their public speaking skills."

Participants will judge four classes of bison and will give one set of oral reasons. There is no registration fee, and pre-registration is not required but is recommended as participation will be limited to the time slot allotted to the contest. Contact the NBA at 303-292-2833 or jim@nationalbison.com to pre-register and for more information.
