Missouri Livestock Symposium features beef experts and more

Missouri

The Missouri Livestock Symposium to be held Dec. 5 and 6 in Kirksville, Mo., may be the best deal in the United States for those folks interested in beef cattle and livestock in general. Where else can you go that features a sold-out trade show, nationally acclaimed speakers from 16 states, and two free meals?

There is no pre-registration and everything is absolutely free except for the evening entertainment Dec. 6, country music star John Anderson. And, if that isn't enough, if you are from out of town and need lodging, let sponsoring motels know you are there for the Livestock Symposium and get rooms for a flat $50 rate. Without question, if you are a serious beef cattle producer, this is a program you really need to attend.

This year's Missouri Livestock Symposium Beef Section lineup includes talks on: A New Era in Cattle Selection, Dr. Jim Gibb, Lousville, Colo., and Calvin Gunter, Harahan, La.; Profit Strategies-The Top Ten Strategies from No Better Bull and Fight Rising Input Costs with Improved Genetic Efficiency, Lee Leachman, Wellington, Colo.; Co-product Storage Tips, John Hay, University of Nebraska-Lincoln; Taking Steps to Control Feed Costs, Dr. Justin Sexten, University of Missouri; and Current Parasite Dilemmas and Strategies, Dr. T.A. Yazwinski, University of Arkansas-Fayetteville.

In addition to the beef cattle section, other topics of interest to beef cattle producers can be found in the stock dog section where Kansan Laura Stimatze gives three talks ranging from selecting the right dog through advanced training. The forages section also features numerous talks that producers will find practical including Ten Ideas for 365 Days of Grazing and The Future of Grass--Energy or Grazing?

The Missouri Livestock Symposium opens its doors at 4 p.m., Dec. 5, and trade show hours are 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., with a free beef supper served at 6 p.m. The featured evening program includes Trent Loos, recognition of long-time agriculture educators, and winners of the Classic Tractor Contest. Dr. Kyle Kent, Green City, Mo., will also be inducted into the Northeast Missouri Livestock Symposium Hall of Fame.

Symposium hours Dec. 6 are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the educational programs starting at 9 a.m. A free Governor's Style luncheon sponsored by the Missouri Department of Agriculture and numerous Missouri Commodity groups is featured at noon.
