Meetings scheduled on oilseed crop opportunities for Texas growers

Texas

Whether oilseed crops are used for biodiesel production, cooking oil or other industrial and food use, the U.S. and international demand is growing, according to a Texas AgriLife Extension Service specialist.

To address the many questions surrounding growing of oilseed crops, AgriLife Extension will host two meetings for producers in the High Plains, South Plains and Rolling Plains areas, said Dr. Calvin Trostle, AgriLife Extension agronomist in Lubbock.

Registration for both meetings will begin at 8 a.m., and each will conclude by 4 p.m. Topics to be covered include: cost of production, market outlook, economic considerations, markets and delivery points, and crop production of winter canola, sunflower, safflower, sesame and castor.

This first meeting will be Dec. 10 at the Plainview Convention Center/Plainview Country Club, 2902 West 4th Street. For more information or to register, contact the AgriLife Extension office in Hale County at 806-291-5267, or the Texas AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Lubbock, 806-746-6101, ext. 4806, or ctrostle@ag.tamu.edu .

The second meeting will be Dec. 11 at the Multi-Purpose Events Center Exhibit Hall, 1000 5th Street, in Wichita Falls. For more information or to register contact the AgriLife Extension office in Wichita County, 940-716-8610 or mdabovic@ag.tamu.edu.

There will be no fee for the meetings, but advance registration is requested by Dec. 8 for meal-planning purposes, Trostle said. The noon meal at both meetings is being sponsored by Producers Cooperative Oil Mill, which operates oilseed crushing facilities in Oklahoma City.

On-farm biodiesel production will be discussed, and an operating mobile biodiesel unit will be demonstrated at each meeting, Trostle said. The mobile biodiesel unit is fully self-contained, including an oilseed press and a biodiesel unit.

The biodiesel unit can use virgin vegetable oil or used cooking oil, he said. Canola seed crushing, oil extrusion and meal production will be observed, and AgriLife Extension staff will demonstrate how biodiesel is made.

Anyone interested in producing or marketing oilseed crops or on-farm fuel production is encouraged to participate in these meeting, he said.

Two continuing education units will be offered to pesticide applicators at each meeting, Trostle said.
