Harkin: USDA must help Agriprocessors providers

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP)--Sen. Tom Harkin is urging the U.S. Department of Agriculture to take action to protect producers and auction barns who haven't received payment from the troubled Agriprocessors kosher meatpacking plant.

In a letter to the USDA sent on Dec. 1, Harkin said that many of the producers who are suffering because of Agriprocessors' troubles are already operating at a loss.

Agriprocessors has filed for bankruptcy in the aftermath of a May 12 immigration raid at its Postville plant that led to the arrest of nearly 400 workers.

Harkin says the Packers and Stockyards Act was designed to protect sellers in a similar situation. He says the USDA is obligated to help.
