Elbert County team wins 85th National 4-H Livestock Judging Contest

The North American International Livestock Exposition, is home to the National 4-H Livestock Judging Contest. The 2008 contest marks the 85th National Contest, which will always be remembered by the judging team from Elbert County, Colorado.

The team, including: Curtis Doubet, Parker; Garrett Liss, Elbert; Dan Sewald, Kiowa and Wyatt Taylor, Kiowa, combined for the most points among the top 4-H teams from 32 different states to win the title of national champion 4-H team. The team, coached by Garrett Miller and Dean Link from Kiowa, Colo., are now eligible to attend the 167th Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh, Scotland in June 2009.

"The members on this team have worked very hard since they were all 10 or 11 years old to earn this title," states head coach Garrett Miller. "It is quite an honor to work with and represent Elbert County and Colorado with these young men who exemplify the 4-H motto--"To make the best better."

In addition to earning the national champion title, the team placed fourth in sheep, second in swine, tenth in beef and eighth in reasons. Individually, Curtis Doubet placed third in sheep and sixth overall. Wyatt Taylor placed second in swine and Garrett Liss placed 18th overall.
