Catlett to headline CSU Extension Ag Conference

Colorado

Filling the shoes of last year's keynote speaker will not be easy. Lowell Catlett will ably fill this niche for the upcoming Southern Rocky Mountain Agricultural Conference and Trade Fair, the largest farm show in Southern Colorado. This Ag Conference will be held at Ski Hi Park in Monte Vista from Feb. 10 to 13, 2009. Lowell Catlett, Dean of Agriculture at New Mexico State University, will provide humor as a futurist and follow in the same vein as last year's cowboy poet. He is scheduled to give the keynote address Feb. 12. This is the fourth year that the conference has been scheduled for four consecutive days. One key change this year--Potato Day is changed to Feb. 11.

Our keynote speaker is sponsored by Farm Credit, Colorado Potato Administrative Committee and CSU Extension. The keynote this year is Feb. 12. Lowell Catlett is an exciting futurist whose knowledge of technologies and their implications on the way we will live and work is addressed in his varied and upbeat presentations. His vast knowledge astounds corporate and association audiences both nationally and internationally. His presentations are thought-provoking and highly-entertaining. His presentation will be a highlight for the conference and keep things on the lighter side, says Dillon.

The conference will undoubtedly feature a sold-out Agricultural Trade Fair. The conference will address a wide-range of topics from alfalfa quality on Forage Day (Feb. 10), potato management and pests on Potato Day (Feb. 11); small grain and keynote speaker (Feb. 12); and water topics on Feb. 13. This 26th annual show will be held at Ski Hi Park and will feature more than 100 ag-related exhibits. Last year's attendance was about 900 growers and show organizers are hoping to attract even more growers this year.

The Ag Trade Fair is managed by the Monte Vista Chamber of Commerce. A former Chamber manager said "Exhibitors come from many states. They bring the latest and greatest in agriculture to this show, especially potato production equipment and forage handling equipment." Exhibits range from machinery to products and services. Last year's exhibitors included water meters, electric suppliers, pivot controllers, trucks, seed companies, diesel engines, potato handling equipment, potato bags, potato seed, tools, crop consultants, cell phones, business band radios, irrigation pumps, storage controllers, storage insulation products plus many local and national ag-chemical companies.

"Even though the Trade Fair adds a lot to the conference, the focus is a full slate of educational programs that include a wide variety of topics," says Area Extension Agent, Merlin Dillon.

SLV Area Extension organizes this conference and tries to include a broad range of topics important to crop and livestock production in the San Luis Valley. For more information, call Merlin Dillon or Rob Davidson at SLV Research Center, 719-754-3494 ext. 12.
