American Shorthorn Association elects new boardThe American Shorthorn Association 2008 annual meeting was held during the 2008 North American International Livestock Exposition Nov. 15. The meeting entailed ASA announcements, financial reports as well as the election of three ASA members to the Board of Directors. Retiring from the ASA board of directors was the President, Richard Hahn, Hahn Family Shorthorns from Minonk, Ill. Hahn has served on the board since 2002. John Hagie, Clarion, Iowa and Derek Jungels, Kathryn, N.D., were re-elected to the board to serve another three years. Newly elected to the board was Wes Stover, Binger, Okla. John Hagie, Cyclone Trace Cattle Co., has served on the board for the last three years and he will continue on the board due to his passion for the breed and the association. "I do not want to leave and be a part of the problem. I want to be a part of the solution and I can best do that by serving three more years as a member of the board of directors," explains Hagie about the challenges he has previously faced while on the board. Derek Jungels, Jungels Shorthorn Farm, currently runs more than 200 head of purebred and commercial females and his family has been involved with Shorthorns since the 1920s. Jungels presently serves as president of First National Bank of ND-LaMoure, secretary/treasurer for the ND Shorthorn Association and LaMoure Community Development Board of Directors. "Whether it's in the show ring or the pasture, Shorthorn can get it done," comments Jungles. "I feel we need to aggressively expound on the infinite amount of potential we have as a breed. For both venues, I feel I am qualified to help ensure the success and longevity of the Shorthorn breed." Wes Stover, Stover Cattle Co., has been involved in the cattle business since helping his granddad tend to his cows as a young child. Both of Stover's children have served on the American Junior Shorthorn Association board of directors, and he and his wife, Cheryl, have been active advisors for the Oklahoma Junior Shorthorn Association. "The current and past leadership of our association has done an admirable job in creating and implementing programs designed to expand the acceptability of our product. The continuance of these programs is vital to the success of the Shorthorn breed," says Stover. "As in every organization, I feel the key to prosperity is education, communication, and hard work." Serving as the Executive Committee is John Hagie, president, Boyd Strope, Abertees Clan, O'Neill, Neb., vice-president, and Derek Jungels. Directors serving on the board are Virginia Davis, KV Cattle, Franklin, Ind.; Nancy Ferguson, Hillside Farm, Corvalis, Ore.; Ricky Guidry, RL Cattle Co, Bell City, La.; Les Mathers, Leveldale Farms, Morton, Ill.; Billy Zach Taylor, Taylor Stock Farm, Salem, Ky.; and Wes Stover, Stover Cattle Co, Binger, Okla. 12/8/08 Date: 12/3/08 Advertisement
