Seed to take center stage at "Moving the Wheat Seed Industry Forward" meetingOklahoma Wheat is Oklahoma's fourth most valuable agricultural commodity and Oklahoma is the country's fourth most valuable winter wheat producer. With declining commodity prices and rising production costs, Oklahoma wheat producers understand the need for timely research and information on input efficiencies to increase their bottom line. Seed, the most critical initial input for every crop season, has been the focus of agricultural research for decades. Volumes have been learned about varietal needs, fertilization, seedling vigor, seed purity, seed production, seed storage and the production of quality grain from quality seed. On Feb. 24, 2009 at the Express Event Center in Oklahoma City, "seed" will take center stage as AgriPro Wheat, the Oklahoma Seed Trade Association, the Oklahoma Wheat Growers Association and the Oklahoma Wheat Commission will co-sponsor a meeting for farmers, seedsmen, educators and researchers entitled "Moving the Wheat Seed Industry Forward." Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. Speakers will include Daryl Strouts, executive director of the Kansas Crop Improvement Association, Mark Hodges, executive director of the Oklahoma Wheat Commission, Dr. Brett Carver, Oklahoma State University Wheat Breeder, Dr. Frank Gilstrap, center director, Texas AgriLife and Dr. Allan Fritz, Kansas State University Wheat Breeder.
