NCTA Livestock Judging Team earning recognitionNebraska The Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture's Livestock Judging Team started their first set of competitions on the road. From Oct. 22 through Oct. 28, the freshmen team competed at the Oklahoma State Mock Contest in Stillwater, Okla.; the Buck Cattle Contest in Madill, Okla.; and the Louisiana State Fair Contest in Shreveport, La. Each team member judges classes of cattle, swine, and sheep, ordering the quality of the class from highest to lowest. Classes are either breeding or market animals, so students must know various types of qualities that are beneficial to the type of animal they are judging. The team, consisting of Katie Brown (Valentine, Neb.), Richard Froning (Valentine, Neb.), Caleb Jensen (Overton, Neb.), Tyler Foland (Palmer, Neb.), Morgan Glause (Palmer, Neb.), and Ben Canfield (Clarksville, Mich.), placed in the top ten as a team at all three competitions. Students' placings are based on their overall performance in ranking the classes. At the Oklahoma State Mock Contest, Ben Canfield was 11th in placings, Morgan Glause was 14th in placings, and Richard Froning was 15th in placings. The team stood 3rd overall in placings. At the Buck Cattle Competition, the team was 1st in team placings, and 3rd in oral reasons with a final standing of 3rd overall. The largest competition the group attended was the Louisiana State Fair Competition with 89 freshmen competing in the division. The team had a very solid day placing 6th in swine division, 7th in the cattle division, 8th in the sheep division, and ended up 6th in the overall awards standing. Individuals placing were Caleb Jensen, 7th in the sheep division; Morgan Glause, 10th in cattle and 12th high individual overall; Richard Froning, 15th overall; and Ben Canfield, 20th overall. Team member Morgan Glause notes, "The opportunities I have with the team are fun and exciting. I'm also learning a lot of details about cattle that I didn't know before. Being on the team will help me be able to pick out my own good quality cattle." Glause plans to own his own Angus herd someday. Lately, the team has added a few more members. Dakota Button (Taylor, Neb.), Cheyanne Maguire (Leigh, Neb.), Syndee Adams (Superior, Neb.), and Forrest Trachsel (Goodland, Kan.) have decided to add livestock judging to their activities. The team's next competitions will be Dec. 12 and 13 at the Northern Exposure Cattle Contest in Stillwater, Okla., and the Express Ranches Competition in Yukon, Okla.
