Insurance company makes peanut butter donation

Texas

The owners and employees of Whittenburg Crop Insurance and Jones and Lowe Agency donated a semi truckload of peanuts to the Texas Food Bank this holiday season on behalf of their customers.

Ted Higginbottom, Whittenburg Crop Insurance owner and Texas Peanut Producers Board director, said the donation will help the Texas Food Bank, which is in dire need of non-perishable items after this year's destructive hurricanes that hit the Texas Gulf Coast.

"The average food bank recipient is a person who is just like us, but has lost their job, had a family illness or has been through a fire or flood like Hurricane Ike," Higginbottom said. "They usually just get food one or two times until they can get back on their feet. The food bank just helps them help themselves."

Through a program called the Texas PALS (Peanuts Are Lending Support) Peanut Butter Initiative, donated Texas-grown peanuts are shipped to Houston to be made into peanut butter, which will be sent to food banks all over the state. Texas PALS is a collaborative effort by the Texas Peanut Producers Board, Texas Food Bank Network, commercial peanut shellers, and the Texas Department of Agriculture.

"This is a great example of how local businesses can help out Texans who are in need not only for this holiday season, but throughout the year," said Texas Peanut Producers Board Executive Director Shelly Nutt. "A donation like this will help many, many people in our state by providing them with a nutritious, high protein food product."
