First Kurt Bucholz Conservation Award winner announced

Wyoming

The first Kurt Bucholz Conservation Award winner was announced in mid-December by the Wyoming Stock Growers Agricultural Land Trust.

Kurt Bucholz, DVM, one of WSGALT's early supporters, supported the concept of conservation easements as an enduring means of ranchland protection. Bucholz devoted countless hours serving the agriculture community and was an expert on Wyoming water law and a fierce advocate of private property rights. In addition, Bucholz served two terms in the Wyoming State legislature before passing away after a battle with cancer in 2006.

The first Kurt Bucholz Conservation Award was given to Dennis Sun, owner and publisher of the Wyoming Livestock Roundup.

"I was really humbled by the award since there are so many people in agriculture deserving of the recognition," said Sun. He was presented a bronze depiction of the WSGALT logo created by Saratoga artist Jerry Palen.

Kurt's wife, Laura, presented the award, stating, "Dennis introduced the Coordinated Resource Management Planning process to the landowners of Wyoming. His use of this process on his own ranch to develop grazing plans, install water improvements for cattle and wildlife, and increase Sage Grouse habitat has made him an obvious choice for this and many other conservation awards."

Dennis' long-time friend Bob Budd had this to say, "Dennis has never been a shrill voice. Even though he buys ink by the barrel these days, his career is exemplified by his constant faith in the role landowners play in conservation, wildlife management, and the future of Wyoming. His patience and perseverance shines in every single thing he does, and he does a whole lot for all of us."
