Finalists announced for 2009 WSGA Environmental Stewardship Program

Winner to receive Leopold Conservation Award

Wyoming

The Wyoming Stock Growers Association and Sand County Foundation announced recently the three finalists for the annual WSGA Environmental Stewardship Award and Leopold Conservation Award in Wyoming. These statewide awards are given to an agricultural landowner who has exhibited exceptional natural resource stewardship.

The three finalists are Ryan Fieldgrove of Buffalo; Rocky Foy of the Foy Ranch near Glendo; and Ron and Linda Heward of the 7E Ranch near Shirley Basin. The winner, to be announced in January, will be featured this summer at the annual Environmental Stewardship Tour. As part of the Leopold Conservation Award they will also receive a check for $10,000 from SCF. The two remaining finalists will each receive $1,000. EnCana Oil & Gas (USA) Inc. also partners with WSGA and SCF in granting the awards.

John Pearson of the Lake DeSmet Conservation District assisted in nominating Ryan Fieldgrove and wrote, "Ryan is a progressive, innovative and committed operator. He wishes to educate his children in good conservation practices so they have the same opportunity he experienced with being 'raised on the ranch'."

Misty Hays, president of the Wyoming Section Society for Range Management, wrote a letter to nominate Rocky Foy. "Rocky is always thinking of ways he can improve his ranch for current and future generations of Foys. He has proven to be an excellent land steward by challenging himself to improve the management of the ranch and never accepting status quo," wrote Hays.

The 7E Ranch was nominated in part by Marji Patz, District Conservationist with Natural Resources Conservation Service. She noted, "Mr. Heward is a producer that I always enjoy seeing walk into my office--and I often times feel a tinge of nervousness because he challenges the knowledge of those around him, seeking to learn what he can and to be on top of what may assist his operation."
