Cattle on feed numbers releasedSouth Dakota: South Dakota's 1,000-plus capacity feedlots reported 220,000 cattle on feed for the slaughter market on Dec. 1, according to the South Dakota office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. This is up 5,000 head from a year earlier and up 20,000 head from a month earlier. Placements during November totaled 57,000 head, up 7,000 head from last year but down 13,000 head from October 2008. Marketings of fed cattle during November totaled 35,000 head, down 3,000 head from last year and down 8,000 head from October 2008. Other disappearance during November totaled 2,000 head, unchanged from last year and unchanged from October 2008. Iowa: There were 707,000 cattle on feed for the slaughter market in all feedlots in Iowa on Dec. 1, up 4 percent from Nov. 1, but down 16 percent from Dec. 1, 2007. Feedlots with a capacity greater than 1,000 head had 500,000 head on feed, up 3 percent from last month but down 12 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity less than 1,000 head had 207,000 head on feed, up 5 percent from last month but down 27 percent from last year. Placements during November totaled 129,000 head, down 7 percent from last month and 15 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity greater than 1,000 head placed 92,000 head, down 12 percent from last month and down 4 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity less than 1,000 head placed 37,000 head. This is up 16 percent from last month but down 33 percent from last year. Marketings for November were 99,000 head, down 17 percent from last month and down 9 percent from last year. Feedlots with a capacity greater than 1,000 head marketed 75,000 head, down 19 percent from last month but unchanged from last year. Feedlots with a capacity less than 1,000 head marketed 24,000 head, down 8 percent from last month and 29 percent from last year. Other disappearance totaled 5,000 head. Nebraska: Nebraska feedlots, with capacities of 1,000 or more head, contained 2.38 million cattle on feed on Dec. 1, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field Office. This inventory was down 6 percent from last year and 5 percent below Dec. 1, 2006. Placements during November totaled 440,000 head, down 9 percent from 2007 and 4 percent below December 2006. Fed cattle marketings for the month of November totaled 355,000 head, the same as last year but 7 percent below November two years ago. Other disappearance during December 2008 totaled 15,000 head, compared with 10,000 head in 2007 and 2006. Kansas: The number of cattle on feed on Dec. 1 in Kansas feedlots with 1,000 head or more capacity totaled 2.31 million head, down 8 percent from a year ago but up 4 percent from Nov. 1. Placements during November totaled 405,000 head, down 10 percent from a year ago and October 2008 placements of 450,000 head. Marketings during November totaled 310,000 head, 13 percent below November 2007 and 14 percent below October 2008. Other disappearance was 15,000 head, unchanged from a year ago but down 5,000 from the previous month. The percent of November placements by weight was: under 600 pounds, 21 percent; 600-699 pounds, 31 percent; 700-799 pounds, 30 percent; and 800 pounds or heavier, 18 percent. Texas: Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in Texas feedlots with capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 2.81 million head on Dec. 1, down 7 percent from a year ago. According to the monthly report released by the Texas Field Office, the estimate was up 4 percent from the Nov. 1 level. Producers placed 510,000 head in commercial feedlots during November, the same as a year ago but down 19 percent from last month. Texas commercial feeders marketed 395,000 head during November, down 19 percent from last year and down 20 percent from last month. On Dec. 1, there were 2.38 million head of cattle and calves on feed in the Northern High Plains, 85 percent of the state's total. The number on feed across the area was down 7 percent from last year but up 4 percent from the November total. November placements in the Northern High Plains totaled 431,000 head, down 18 percent from the October total. Marketings were down 22 percent from last month to 329,000 head. United States: Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 11.3 million head on Dec. 1. The inventory was 6 percent below Dec. 1, 2007 and 5 percent below Dec. 1, 2006. Placements in feedlots during November totaled 2.02 million, 5 percent below 2007 but 7 percent above 2006. Net placements were 1.95 million head. During November, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 565,000, 600-699 pounds were 630,000, 700-799 pounds were 450,000, and 800 pounds and greater were 370,000. Marketings of fed cattle during November totaled 1.58 million, 9 percent below 2007 and 12 percent below 2006. This is the second lowest fed cattle marketings for the month of November since the series began in 1996.
