"Keeping the Family Farming" workshopKansas A key to the success of a two-generation business arrangement is a common understanding of where the business is going and what it will accomplish. If the parties involved have different ideas about the future of the business, the business arrangement may fail. Whitey Whitehill, Finney County Extension agent, reports that a two-day workshop will be held at Garden City to address these issues and opportunities, Jan. 10 and Jan. 30. Three two-day workshops are planned across the state of Kansas to assist farm families at Garden City, Chanute and El Dorado. These conferences are designed to help farms and ranches with their succession planning for the next generation and understanding the processes involved as farm families prepare for transitions and change. We'll start by focusing on what each individual family member's needs and fears are. Other topics will include: Communicating effectively with those you live and work with; Developing a farm game plan; Concerns, hopes and needs of individual farm team members; Who's in charge; Human resource evaluation; Financial feasibility of adding additional family members and on to communicating among the family of what's going to happen with the legacy of their family farm or ranch and eventually help the families understand their choices in estate planning. In addition, the registration fee includes a K-State Farm Analyst that will be available outside of the scheduled meetings to help you further implement what you learn. The 2008-2009 "Keeping the Family Farming" workshop in Garden City will be on Jan. 10 and Jan. 30, 2009 and held in the Grandstand meeting room on the fairgrounds. The registration deadline is Dec. 15 and includes meals and notebooks. There is a late registration fee.
