Cargill to take over Columbus, Neb, plant

COLUMBUS, Neb. (AP)--Cargill Value Added Meats has signed a purchase agreement for a meatpacking plant in Columbus.

The contract with Carneco Foods LLC was signed Dec. 11. Final closing is scheduled for Jan. 2, with Cargill taking over the plant a few days later.

The Columbus plant produces frozen beef cuts, and Cargill said it will continue those operations.

Cargill had been searching for a new facility since its plant in Booneville, Ark., was destroyed in a March fire.

Cargill Value Added Meats is a division of Cargill Inc., based in Wayazata, Minn.

Carneco is owned by Oklahoma City-based Lopez Foods Inc.
