Amarillo livestock sales

The Amarillo Livestock Auction, Amarillo, Texas, reported receipts of 563 head Dec. 16, compared to 355 head last week and 749 head last year, according to the USDA-Texas Department of Agriculture Market News, Amarillo, Texas.

Compared to last week, there were not enough of any class on offer to make an adequate market price trend comparison. The bulk of the supply were Medium and large frame 1 to 2, 300- to 800-pound feeder steers and heifers. Trade and demand were moderate. Slaughter cows made up 3% of the offering, slaughter bulls 3%, replacement cows 1% and feeders 93%. The feeder supply included 50% steers and bulls and 50% heifers, with approximately 52% of the run weighed over 600 pounds. The next auction will be Jan. 6, 2009.

Steers: Medium and large frame 1, package 367 lbs., 108.00; 400 to 500 lbs., 103.00; lot 529 lbs., 90.00, package 580 lbs., full 82.00; load 696 lb. calves 87.00; package 780 lbs., 84.00; package 896 lbs., 85.50. Medium and large frame 1 to 2, package 712 lbs., 79.00. Medium and large frame 2, part load 593 lbs., 82.00; 662 to 665 lbs., 71.00 to 73.00. Small and medium frame 1 to 2, package 523 lbs., 51.00.

Feeder bulls: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, package 590 lbs., 75.00; package 722 lbs., 55.00.

Heifers: Medium and large frame 1, 400 to 450 lbs., 78.00 to 83.50; load 688 lb. calves 84.00; 650 to 700 lbs., fleshy 75.00 to 76.00; package 725 lbs., 73.00. Medium and large frame 1 to 2, package 367 lbs., 89.00; 400 to 500 lbs., 73.00 to 74.00; package 530 lbs., fleshy 64.00; package 693 lbs., 65.00, package 676 lbs., fleshy 55.00. Medium and large frame 2, part load 557 lbs., 74.00. Small and medium frame 1, package 543 lbs., 65.00.

Slaughter cows: Breakers, 75 to 80% lean, 1460 lbs., 39.00. Boners, 80 to 85% lean, 925 to 1220 lbs., 39.00 to 42.00. Lean, 85 to 90% lean, 1000 to 1200 lbs., 39.50; 85 to 90% lean, 800 to 1000 lbs., 34.50 to 38.00; 85 to 90% lean, under 800 lbs., 33.00.

Slaughter bulls: Yield grade 1 to 2, 2005 lbs., 49.50; low dressing, 1450 to 2135 lbs., 46.00 to 48.00.

Bred cows: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, young to middle-aged, 950 to 1200 lbs., 4 to 7 months bred, 500.00 to 600.00 per head. Small and medium frame 3 to 4, Longhorns, middle-aged, 750 to 900 lbs., 5 months bred, 230.00 per head.

Pairs: Medium and large frame 1 to 2, young 800 lbs., with 400-lb. calf, 1060.00 per pair.
