Time short for soil samplingNebraska Although there is already frost on the ground in some places, it's still possible to get soil samples, said a University of Nebraska-Lincoln specialist. According to Bob Klein, Western Nebraska crops specialist at UNL's West Central Research and Extension Center, the advantage of fall soil sampling is that it provides more time to get the analysis and make decisions before the busy spring planting season. Although the price of nitrogen has come down from its high point, it's still expensive, Klein said. Proper soil sampling will help producers use just the right amount to get maximum yields while incurring minimum production cost. Klein recommends sampling at three depths. First is a surface sample from zero to 8 inches. Be sure to select sites that are representative of the whole field. Next, he recommends two deep samples, one from 8 to 18 inches and another from 18 to 36 inches. These samples will provide information on residual nitrogen in the field, helping to save unnecessary fertilizer cost. They will also help keep nitrogen out of the water table. New soil testing programs on the Internet will make it easy to decide on the amounts of fertilizer to apply.
