SAKW to hold 58th annual meeting in Topeka

Kansas

"Coming Together to Meet our Watershed Challenges" is the theme for this years meeting to be held in the Holiday Inn Holidome in Topeka on Jan. 22 and 23, 2009. Barb Oltjen, president of the State Association of Kansas Watersheds from Robinson, will preside over the meeting that will bring together representatives of the 85 watershed districts in Kansas, many state and federal agencies, organizations, and individuals.

The annual meeting will kickoff with Col. Roger A. Wilson Jr., commander of the Kansas City District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, giving the keynote address titled "U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, More Than 404 Permits."

Additional topics of the first day will cover topics such as: using GIS capabilities to track watershed district data; dealing with Operation and Maintenance of watershed dams; and how Floodplain Management affects watershed district operations. Four different agencies (DWR, KWO, SCC, and NRCS) will give update reports covering current and future program challenges. The SAKW business meeting will look at several resolutions to support legislative and program funding initiatives.

The evening session of the first days activities will be the annual Legislative Banquet where watershed districts can dine and converse with this years legislators as they begin their challenging task of creating policy to guide Kansas through the next political year.

Day two of the annual meeting will begin by hearing from representatives of the National Watershed Coalition who will report on watershed activities from a national perspective. Additional information will be discussed relating to the upcoming NWC 11th biennial meeting being held in Wichita, May 17 to 20.

A Kansas Stream Mitigation Guideline training workshop will conclude this year's annual meeting. The KSMG has been used in Kansas for the past year as a useful tool to assess, evaluate, and mitigate potential impacts to Kansas streams associated with watershed projects.

Information on annual meeting registration, motel reservations, resolutions listings, and the meeting agenda can be found on the SAKW website at www.sakw.org. Additional contacts about the annual meeting can be directed to Herbert R. Graves Jr., SAKW executive director, phone: 785-922-6664, fax: 785-922-6080 or by e-mail at sakwwatersheds@sbcglobal.net.
