KAWS teams up with NRCS to enhance Playa Lakes WetlandsKansas The Kansas Alliance for Wetlands and Streams, Inc., and the Natural Resources Conservation Service announce the hiring of Arthur Gomez, Wetland Coordinator, said Charles Barden, KAWS Board Chairman and KSU Extension Forester, Manhattan, and Eric B. Banks, State Conservationist, NRCS, Salina, Kan. "This is the first time in Kansas NRCS history that we have been able to have a person from a non-profit organization like KAWS located in our office," said Banks. Mr. Gomez started Dec. 1, and is located at the NRCS Scott City Field Office working with local landowners in the surrounding counties on wetland restoration and protection. "KAWS hired Mr. Gomez to work with NRCS in restoring and protecting wetlands," said Barden. NRCS will provide Mr. Gomez with office space, a vehicle, and a computer. NRCS is the primary federal agency that works with private landowners to help them protect their natural resources. KAWS is using funds from a Playa Lakes Joint Venture Grant to hire the coordinator. The PLJV is a non-profit partnership of federal and state wildlife agencies, conservation groups, private industry, and landowners dedicated to conserving bird habitat in the Southern Great Plains. "We are excited about the opportunity this will provide to local landowners in southwest Kansas to restore and protect their valuable wetlands, such as the playa lakes," said Barth Crouch, PLJV Conservation Policy Director. KAWS works with local people to create, protect, and restore the state's wetland and stream resources. Organized in 1996, KAWS is a 501.C.3. educational public charity reaching a broad spectrum of individuals, groups, and governments to improve the wetlands and streams they own or control. Over its 11-year span, the organization has helped educate thousands of adults and students about the state's invaluable wetland and stream resources, their condition, and how to protect and improve them. KAWS provides its services through 12 local chapters that cover the entire state.
